Congressman Cuellar Announces
$304,000 for San Antonio Fighting Back

Congressman Cuellar announced #305,000 for San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc.  The award will be distributed by the U.S. Department of Justice Office Programs under FY 2004 Executive Office for Weed and Seed Program Guide and Application Kit: Continuation Sites and their FY 2004 Weed and Seed Program Support Grants.  The Weed and Seed Grant Program is intended to help eliminate violent and drug related crime from targeted neighborhoods to provide a safer environment for residents living in high-crime areas.  The program implements a two pronged approach to crime prevention and control.  Weed and Seed programs bring residents and community resources together to address crime and improve the overall quality of life in targeted areas.

This is a very unique program,” said Congressman Cuellar.  “With this funding San Antonio Fighting Back is able to take their fight to the heart of community violence by empowering and enabling residents to take charge and reclaim their neighborhoods.”

Weed and Seed funding is a community-based initiative that encompasses a comprehensive and innovative multi-agency approach to law enforcement, city revitalization and crime prevention.  San Antonio Fighting Back will use these two grants to enhance its Re-Entry program to continue enabling and empowering men and women to bring about positive changes in their lives and communities and to strengthen, restore, rehabilitate and revitalize the area surrounding their new West San Antonio site.

San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc.’s New West Weed and Seed program is a comprehensive strategy designed to reduce the risk factors of drug related crime, substance abuse, gang activity and violence.  This program will support law enforcement, interdiction and narcotics efforts, community policing, prevention efforts to prevent/reduce crime, violence, substance abuse and gangs, and neighborhood restoration activities.  In addition, this program will support youth development, family strengthening and faith-based activities” said Linda Tippins, Executive Vice President for San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc.

This grant will be administered by the Community Capacity Development Office.

One of Cuellar’s top priorities is to continue seeking grants and other types of federal dollars for District 28 residents.  For more information on how to apply for federal grants, please call Victoria Martinez, Grants Coordinator, at 202-225-1640.
