SAFB, Inc. Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

In 2005 Texas Became the Nation’s Newest “Majority-Minority” State and San Antonio became the largest Hispanic-majority city in the U.S.

To honor the city’s rich Hispanic heritage San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. held its 1st Annual “Hispanic Heritage Health and Wellness Resource Fair” on Saturday, October 14th.

Over 100 people attended the event and received a wealth of information and resources in English and Spanish from over ten agencies.  The event also featured entertainment and activities for children of all ages.

Language is often a barrier that disconnects people from receiving services to help improve their lives. San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. believes in connecting people with the resources they need to live happy, healthy and productive lives.  “There are many resources available but many Spanish speaking people may be unaware or not understand what’s available.  Events like this one can help foster a relationship between our Spanish speaking communities and the agencies who serve them”, said Mary McNaughton, SAFB Youth Services Director and event organizer.

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15).  San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. plans to celebrate every year with an annual “Hispanic Heritage Health and Wellness Resource Fair”.

The agencies participating in this year’s event were Merced Housing, City of San Antonio Senior Service Division, Texas Health Steps/Texas STAR Program Outreach & Informing, Aetna CHIPS/Medicaid, Terra Genesis, Habitat for Humanity, City of San Antonio Department of Community Initiatives, Alms House, Alpha Omega, Texas Cooperative Extension, San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc., San Antonio Time Dollar Community Connections, Evidence of Grace Counseling Center and St. PJ’s Counseling Center.
