Tired of resident apathy, Reverend Dukes, Executive Director of Project Assist; and Darrell Boyce, San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. (SAFB) East Weed & Seed Coordinator blared Hip-Hop music to motivate the residents of Point East Apartments to come out of their homes and help clear out the trash and debris that filled the streets their children play in. The plan worked. On Thursday, June 17th the residents of the East side apartment complex rallied together to clean up the area they live in.

More youth than adults showed up, but together with Project Assist and SAFB volunteers they filled and disposed of over 100 trash bags, cleared out five parking lots and the main entrance and exit to Point East Apartments.

"Project Assist [exists] to help residents in all areas", said Rev. Duke.  "We talk with them individually and let the residents determine the needs.  This helps get residents to cooperate and work in a unified way."

Working in unity was not difficult for the children and adults that showed up to remove the furniture that blocked the garbage dumps, and pick up the trash that lined the fence of the main entrance/exit and debris that filled the landscaping and parking lots.  The job was complete in two hours thanks to the hard work of more than 50 resident children and 10 adults and the volunteers from Project Assist and San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc.!
