Remove the Mask” Youth Conference

San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. (SAFB) and Communities Empowering Youth (CEY) held the 1st “Remove the Mask” Youth Conference designed to educate youth and adults about the pressing issues they face today and how to deal with them.

A large percentage of youth today are faced with child abuse, youth violence, gang violence, drug use and many other illegal activities.  In short, many youth hide behind a mask of fear and pain.  The “Remove the Mask” youth conference provided local youth with positive and constructive ways to deal with the obstacles they face everyday.  Over 200 students participated in the two-day conference held July 24th and 25th, at Davis Middle School.  The conference was designed to empower youth to make good decisions and not succumb to peer pressure.

The workshops offered a variety of topics including domestic violence prevention, HIV/AIDS awareness, stress management and internet safety.

Miss Teen America and Miss USA were among the many motivational speakers that participated during the conference.  Special Assistant of Communities Empowering Youth, Jacqueline Speights stated, “I believe that youth get involved in illegal activities because they are not educated on the harm that this behavior can create. This conference gave them the tools they need to rise above these activities, and become healthy and productive adults.” The event culminated with a dance and youth performance at the Claude Black Center on East Commerce.
