2007 World AIDS Day
Candlelight Vigil at UTSA

World AIDS Day, established by the World Health Organization in 1988, is the global day of observance joining the partnerships of world wide governments, national AIDS programs, churches, communities, and individuals to Educate, Motivate and Mobilize against HIV/AIDS.  Over twelve local agencies will join to remember those who died from HIV/AIDS, to promote awareness and to encourage individuals to take the initiative and become a leader in the fight against AIDS.

Bexar County reported in 2005 that, locally, over 5000 youth ages 13-22 are infected with either STDs, HIV, or are dually infected. The San Antonio Independent School District had the highest percentage of STD’s with Edgewood not far behind.

With an estimated 38.6 million people worldwide living with HIV at the end of 2005, and more than 25 million people having died of AIDS since 1981, December 1st serves to remind everyone that action makes a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

On November 29th at UTSA Downtown Campus Fighting Back partnered with UTSA and other agencies to hold a Candlelight Vigil to honor those who have died and to show support to those living with HIV/AIDS.

The event featured Ugandan born author Jeremy Jjemba, a twenty-one year old author who writes and speaks out about the lost of his mother and other relatives to AIDS.  Event organizers encouraged everyone to take the initiative, get tested, and become a leader in the fight against AIDS.
