Project SUCCESS

Through the Center of Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), the State of Texas was awarded a State Incentive Grant (SIG).  Monies are for use toward effective strategies to decrease the demand for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among youth.  These funds are being administered through TCADA.  In 2003, SAFB was a recipient of a SIG Grant to implement Project SUCCESS, the A model CSAP program, in the Enterprise/Empowerment Zone.  The program works with the community, schools, parents and students to create a drug-free environment.  By linking each group together, the Project SUCCESS program is able to provide a more thorough treatment and education experience.

Through components like The Prevention Education Series, Individual and Group Counseling, Parent Programs and Referral services, the Project SUCCESS coordinators go into the schools and work closely with students in the middle of the risk continuum.  To reinforce what the students are learning, a Project SUCCESS Parent Coordinator provides parents and caregivers with the same services and training.

The goal of the Project SUCCESS program is to provide lasting a change in the student's life while equipping them to be productive, successful members of society.  To accomplish this, students are taught positive life skills such as communication, decision-making, stress and anger management, problem solving and resisting peer pressure, in addition to substance abuse prevention training.

To reach beyond the students, San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc., through the Project SUCCESS program, works with the Communities In Schools counselors and parents to implement national substance abuse programs such as Red Ribbon Rally, National Drunk/Drugged Driving Awareness Month, Children of Alcoholics Week, Alcohol Awareness Month, Tobacco - Kick Butts Day, Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Great American Smoke Out.

By focusing on a small group of students and parents facilitating in the Project SUCCESS program, and partnering with area schools to develop national substance abuse prevention events, San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. hopes to see wide-spread change in community behaviors and attitudes toward substance abuse.  The Project SUCCESS program is currently targeting 10 schools in the San Antonio, Harlandale and Edgewood Independent School Districts.
